Yale- Agriculture Speech Contest/ Social Media Communications

Participants-Registration fee should follow the convention fees for meals and the participants should have the Early Bird registration deadline as their only deadline in order to prepare the contest. Early registration is $75.00. Hotel reservations should be coordinated through the sponsoring Young Farmer Chapter.

Participation Eligibility

  1. Graduating Senior from high school or first or second year college student.
  2. Each Young Farmer Chapter participating in the State Convention may submit up to two participants.

Criteria I

Topics- Any Ag Topic that is important to you and the public

             Should be a topic spokesperson is knowledgeable about

Turn in written papers of speech to judges prepared before coming to contest at the Morning Session. Papers should be typed in accordance to these specifications -12pt. font, double- spaced, 2-3 pages, thesis, etc. Cite research/ background information, Include the importance of topic and what needs to be done.

Contest-Participants give speeches (2-5 minutes) to judges and fellow participants. Similar to FFA Prepared Public Speaking Contest but natural not memorized from paper but supplemented by written paper. Judges will score speeches and ask questions.

Criteria II

Contestants will be asked to participate in social media, capture pictures and shoot video as a means to communicate the message of agriculture. They will be asked to post their work online.  Use of a phone, computer or electronic device to access social media platforms will be a necessity. The specific guidelines of this portion of the contest will be given to participants at the morning session before speeches.

Contest- Morning Session 9:00AM- Overview of contest with participants including goals and instructions.

Contestants will give speeches before going to luncheon.

Eat lunch at Appreciation Luncheon/ Scholarship Auction 11:30AM

Attend workshops in order to produce social media posts for electronic communications portion of the conference. These will need to be completed by 4:00PM in order for judging to be complete by Banquet time.

Judges scores are independent and averaged by a non-biased third party

First place will present their speech and social media posts will be shown at the Banquet Saturday night. Participants need to plan to attend.


Award 3 places- Dollar amounts if sponsored and or just airfare, registration and hotel at National for top two participants by State Young Farmer Association through Sponsorships. Third place will be an alternate.
